Cobb and Co.'s coach arrived this afternoon early, Avith Christchurch, East Coast, Australian, and Suez mails. At the meeting at the Town Hall last evening of gentlemen willing to assist in raising a fund for the relief of the sufferers by the late lire, the Rev. J. Holland was voted to the chair. After some controversy on the best course to be pursued, the chairman stated that the amount he and Mr Rudkin had already collected Avas £l4, and £3 or £4 was promised. The following Avere appointed a committee : The Rev. J. Holland, Messrs Kirkpatrick, Wilby, Carey, G. Anderson, Hewitt, and Jauion ; with power to add to their number-. Mr Carey was appointed Secretary, and Mr Kirkpatrick treasurer. Messrs Kirkpatrick and Janion volunteered to canvass the town ; and Messrs Carey and Hewitt the Lead. The subscription list will be kept open till the 28fch April. The committee are to meet again on Monday Aveek. The mortal remains of Margaret Ann Fitzgibbon, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fitzgibbon, of Goldsborough, Avill be conveyed from thence to the Hokitika Cemetery to-morrow morning at 11 o'clock. A meeting of intending investors in the Colonial Land Settlement Association was held at St. Patrick's School-room last evening. The Rev. Father Walsh occupied the chair, and addressed a few words ia favour of the association. Messrs
James Cook, J. O'Hagan, and D. Hannan also advocated investing therein ; and at the close of the meeting most of those present took up shares.
Captain Edwin wired about noon yesterday the following weather forecast: — " Watch barometer ; bad weather is approaching from any direction between north-east and north and west. The glass will further fall and increasing northerly sea ; and after 12 hours glass rising and gale from south and west with heavy sea."
We are pleased to observe that steps are at last being taken for the construction ©f that highly important public work the Taipo Bridge. Indeed, for some time past the iron required for the cylinders has been ordered, and it may be inferred that as tenders are now being called for the supply of timber, the work of construction will very soon be commenced. By referring to our advertisement columns some particulars will be found by contractors and others in reference to tendering, the principal of which are that written tenders for the Taipo Bridge timber Contract will be received at the Public Works Offices, Kumara, Hokitika, Greymouth, or Ross, till noon of Saturday, the sth May next, and they are to be addressed to the Hon. the Minister for Public Works, Greymouth.
Mr Charles Bagnall, is the successful tenderer for the construction of a bridge on the Hokitika-Ross road, near Oglivie's.
At the Hokitika Magistrate's Court yesterday, before J. Giles, Esq., R.M., an action was brought by D. Lynch against F. W. Willmott, of the Combination Company, to recover the sum of £7 17s 6d, alleged to be due for board, lodging, and refreshments to Mr A. Herman, a member of the Willmott Combination Company. Mr Lewis appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Purkiss for the defendant. After hearing evidence his Worship gave judgment for the defendant with costs. Mr Purkiss asked for the expenses of Mr and Mrs Willmott and Mr Herman from Greymouth and back; they had been brought down to Hokitika by the plaintiff. Mr Lewis objected to the defendant receiving his expenses. His Worship thought that, under the special circumstances of the case, the defendant was entitled to expenses.
