BILLIARDS.

— COOK V. MITCHELL. These two crack players played a match in February for £IOOO, the terms being 3000 up level. Before play commenced odds of 11 to 18 were laid on Cook, who has always previously defeated Mitchell when not conceding him points. Now, however, the Sheffield man (Mitchell) completely surprised even those who knew him best, for after the first few hundreds he went right away, and ultimately won by 1639. Cook seemed to lack confidence, and never really settled down fairly to the spot, aad not once during the long game succeeded in making 100 off the balls. Mitchell was after the first half-hour all confidence, and this will be believed when at the end of the first night’s play the game was called 1500 to 770 in Mitchell’s favour, the latter leaving off for the night with an unfinished break of 733, made up of 55 and 187 consecutive spot strokes. On the second night there was a very large company present, as might have been expected, to see the conclusion of this extraordinary break. Unfortunately they had not long to wait, for Mitchell broke down at the third shot, making the total of his break 739. It would be unnecessary to describe the game fully from this point, Mr Cook was simply never in it, whilst Mitccbell made breaks of 210,182, 163,145, and actually finished up with an incomplete break of 487, thus running out from 2513 to the required £3OOO.
