Tliis evening, at the Town Hall, a public meeting is to be held for the purpose of extending the operations of collecting a fund for the sufferers by the late fire, and also to form a committee to carry out this object. All persons who sympathise with this charitable movement are invited to attend. The Homeward mail via San Francisco closes on Monday next. The monthly meeting of members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Town Hall last evening ; present—Capt. Dove, Lieut. Anderson, Foreman Close, Secretary Carey, Treasurer Burger, Firemen Ziegler, Schroder’, Ross, M‘Ewen,
Grams, Sharp, Williams, and Spyer. The officers’ report was received. The Secretary was instructed to inquire from the Borough Council who are the persons holding office as Fire Inspectors ; also, if there is any probability of getting a watersupply. It was resolved to apply to Mr Bonar, the agent of the Imperial Insurance Company, for a hand-engine as a donation to the Brigade. The sum of £1 was passed for payment to Firemen Ross and Williams for attendance at the fire on the morning of the 4th inst. Mr Cook, the representative of the “ Colonial Land Settlement Association,” returned from the Christchurch road today, having done a considerable amount of business there for the company. It will be seen that at a meeting of persons interested in promoting the objects of this association is to be held at St. Patrick’s School to-morrow evening, at 8 o’clock. At the Hokitika Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before J. Giles, Esq., R.M., judgment was given in the case of Willett v. Cameron, claim £IOO, value of a greyhound killed by defendant’s coach on the Kanieri bridge, for £4O, and costs £4 11s. The Times says it is understood that Mr Cameron has given notice of appeal. By an Order in Council dated 2nd April, it has been made to appear that, owing to unavoidable circumstances, the Property-Tax Commissioner has failed to make out and forward a valuation roll to the Clerk of each local body in the colony within the time limited by section 4 of “The Rating Act, 1882 and the time has therefore been extended to the 30th April, 1883. Before commencing business in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday morning, Judge Richmond referred in the most feeling terms to the memory of Sir George Arney, late Chief Justice of New Zealand and whose death was announced in our cablegrams yesterday. Ten members of the bar were present. Judge Richmond said the sad news had caused quite a shock to him, though he had known for some time of deceased’s illness. He mentioned that his connection with Sir George had been most pleasing. In referring to the many admirable qualities possessed by Sir George Arney, Judge Richmond said he sustained a great loss by his death. Mr Travers, senior, on behalf of the bar, concurred with the remarks which had fallen from his Honor.
At the recent examination of teachers the only names of candidates in Westland who will be allowed to qualify for “partial success recorded towards Class E” are Jessie Sugden Ralfe and Eliza Roberts ; and amongst those who were partially successful in former years, and have now passed in the additional subjects necessary for a certificate are Alice Ellen Brown and Cpralie de Bakker.
Mr G. W. Herbert (of New Zealand) a character of some repute, made his bow to a Sandhurst audience recently with the Grattan Riggs’ Company. His Stouches in the “ Irish Detective ” created a very favourable inxpx’ession. What with the heat (110° in the shade) and the mosqxxitos, also in the shade, he will not readily forget the golden city. Mr and Mrs Massey are to be tried at the criminal sittings at Invercargill, which commences on the. 24th, chiefly because a Dunedin jury would be lax'gely composed of ratepayers, to whom, as such, the debentures alleged to be stolen belonged. The parents of the px’odigy that was born some time ago near Otaki, ai’e at present staying at the Princess Hotel, Wellington, with their offspring. The twin children, who are seven weeks old, are joined together at the lower part of the back after the manner of the now celebrated Siamese twins. One of them (says the N.Z. Times) appears strong and healthy, and cats and cries after the custom of children of that age, but the other takes no food, nor does it make any noise, although the movements of the face would denote that it is crying lustily.
