THE MISSING BOROUGH COUNCIL COMMITTEE’S MINUTES.

[to the editor.] Sir—Can any of your readers enlighten me as to whether there is any truth in the following rumours, which were current in Kumara yesterday ? Who was the special messenger sent from Hokitika to Kumara on Tuesday evening for certain minutes which were required as evidence for the defence in the case of James Wylde? Who pays his passage to and fro ? Who entered the Town Clerk’s office in the evening, and went away a few minutes after without extinguishing the lamp? Who was laid out in a paddock by some kind ladies about one o’clock in the paorning, helplessly intoxicated ? Who was awoke in a paddock in the morning just in time to catch the Hokitika coach, not knowing whether he was in Kumara or Cass Square ? Who was it swore in the Supreme Court on same day that he “ could not find ” certain minutes ? Was it the same special messenger that was sent from Hokitika for them 1

Were they the same kind ladies that laid the party out in the paddock that discovered the lamp burning in the Town Clerk’s office between 3 and 4 in the morning? , ; Were they the same kind ladies that discovered the keys of the Town Clerk’s office in a paddock, and kindly went and extinguished the lamp, probably saving Kumara another fire ? If these questions can be truly answered in the affirmative, then, Mr Editor, the Press has its duty to perform—justice has been preverted ! and conduct such as this, approaching criminality, deserves sevei*e punishment. I remain, sir, yours truly, Inquisitive. Kumara, April 5, 1883.
