THE BURGESS AND DEFAULTERS' LISTS.

[to the editor.] Sir—The Mayor of Kuraara's letter (which appears in last night's issue of the Kumara Times) is written and signed by him in his official capacity, and as such is entitled to a little more consideration than it would otherwise merit It appears, however, to consist mostly of another person's interpretation of clauses 40 and 41 of the Rating Act, and the clauses as actually .printed in the Act. Now, if his Worship had informed the public how the Town Clerk has been instructed to make out the Burgess List on or before to-day (March 31st), his letter would be of great importance, as he would then have to admit that there was no rate due or made on the 31st day of December 1882, or that the Council intend to pers'st in collecting an illegal rate, and, to add to their catalogue of blunders, intended to make out a Burgess and Defaulters' List that might render the fabricators liable to a prosecution for libel, for that, I take it would be the result if persons names were exposed in the Town Clerk's office on the Defaulters' List for a rate which has no legal existence. Perhaps his Worship' will oblige myself and the public with a reply. . R, Toms. March 31, 1883. ♦ THE ASSESSMENT COURT. [to the editor.] Sir—By advertisement in your paper, April the 6lh is appointed for the sitting of the Assessment Court; and in another advertisement the ratepayers are informed that they can appeal against the valuation put upon their properties up to April 9th. Is this a priuter's error 1 or am I in a fog? or has the Town Clerk made a mistake 1 A. Ratepayer. Kumara, March 31, 1882. [lt is not a printer's error. We are not surprised if you should be in a fog, The Town Clerk has not made a mistake, in this matter. But the fact is the day for the sitting of the Assessment Court for the revision of the local Valuation List for the Borough of Kumara was fixed by the Judge on or before the 10th March, since which date we have been informed a second extension of time has been granted for the preparation of.the Valuation Roll of the Borough, though this has not yet been publicly notified in the Gazette, as required by the 53rd section of the " Rating Act, 1882." Nor. probably lias Dr. Giles, Judge of the Assessment Court, been made aware Of this extension of time.—Ed. K. T.]
