The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon at the usual hour, with a large number of passengers, amongst whom we noticed Dr. Giles, who is returning from Dunedin. Cameron’s coach upset going to Hokitika this morning, about two miles north of Goldsborough. The horses shied at a heap of firewood stacked along the road, and the near wheel went into the side drain. The coach then toppled over. There were seven passengers on it at the time. Inspector Emerson got a severe gash in the fleshy part of the thigh ; M'Kenna, late newspaper agent, got a severe shaking and a bruised left leg. Mr R, J. Seddon, M. H.R., who was suffering from a contusion and flesh wound of the right knee got the same knee hurt again, together with an abrasion of the left knee. The rest of the passengers escaped with a good shaking. A number of men who were working near the scene of the accident, went to the rescue, and, having righted the coach, it proceeded to Hokitika. The coach was driven by one of the grooms. Mr Archibald Forbes lectures to-night and to-morrow night at Greymouth, whither he proceeded by yesterday morning’s tram. Persons desiring to avail themselves of hearing his second lecture on “ Kings and Princes I have Met,” will be enabled to return to Kumara the same night, as arrangements have been made by which a special tram will leave Greymouth at 10 p.m. on Thursday. A. little boy aged three years, son of Mr Adam Blair, of Marsden, had a very narrow escape from a violent death, and, as it was, received very serious injuries. It seems (the Greymouth Star reports) that the little fellow was running about when Mr Blair’s horses were being driven into the stable, when one of the animals out with his hind foot, striking the child on the head, and thereby inflicting a very ugly scalp wound. Fortunately the horse’s foot did not strike the child full on the head, otherwise his death would have been certain. The little sufferer was picked up at once, and the wound stitched up, and we are 1 glad to learn that no serious results arc likely to follow. Henry Mace, an old resident on the Coast, but of late years of Wellington, has become insolvent. A fan lefit was given last night to Mr Fx Villmott, at Greymouth, and the putmo responded to the call by tilling the house—a well-deserved tribute to Mr Willmott’s enterprise in bringing such a powerful company to the Coast.
