GREYMOUTH ANNUAL RACES.
The Greymouth annual Easter races commenced on Saturday, with, the most favourable weather. The following were the events as they came off : West Coast Produce Stakes, of 25 sovs j mile, weights: 2 yrs, 6st 11b j 3 yrs, Bst 21b. Mr D. Donald’s br g Ploughboy, 3 yrs ... ••• ••• •*' Mr R. Harcoart’s ch c Zulu, 3 yrs 2 Mr J. Kilgour’s ch f Comet, 2 yrs 3 Mr Bay butt’s br f Gipsy, 2 yrs ... 0 Mr B. Gough’s bk f Spread the Light, 3 yrs 0 Mr W. Claaghsey’s gr c The Galtee Boy, 3 yrs 0 Mr W. Stewart’s ch f Blantyre, 2 yrs ... ••• ••• ••• 0 This race was something of a surprise. Zulu was decidedly the favorite with the public, though Ploughboy had a few friends. It was a splendid race between Ploughboy and Zulu, both of them running it from the jump. Greymouth Jockey Club Handicap* of 100 sovs : 2 miles. Mr Hugh Muir’s b g Albion, aged, 7st2tb 1 Mr Isaac Freeth’s g m The Field, 6 yrs, Bst 81b ... ... 2 Mr A. W. Dillon’s b c Hercules, 6 yrs, 7st 81b ... ••• 3 Mr James Clarke’s b m Lady Harris, 3 yrs, Bst ... ••• ••• 0 Mr James Clarke’s b m Levant, aged, Bst BJb ... ... ••• 0 Mr Richard Harcourt’s ch g Zulu, 3 yrs, 6st 41b ... ... ••• 0 This was a capital race. Zulu led off, with Lady Harris, The Field, and Albion well up, Levant and Hercules behind. This was the position for the first mile. Then Hercules went to the front with Albion and The Field looking dangerous. At the mile and quarter Albion took the lead, winning comfortably by two lengths, The Field second, and Hercules third. Hack Race, of 10 sovs ; f mile heats, without dismounting ; minimum weight, 9st; post entries. This race brought a field of five, all good horses, Norman was decidedly the favorite with the public, and he did not disappoint them in the first heat, which he won in good style. But it was a different matter in the second. Before the round was finished, his rider pulled him up, and no small dissatisfaction was felt, but needlessly, for the horse was done, arid could not run any more. Unfortunately the rider came in for considerable odium, but undeservedly, Dosey was master of the field, as was seen at the last round, when Norman was beaten on his merits hands down. Nigger looked dangerous at one time, but evidently he was not in first-class fettle. A few who fancied Dosey and backed him on the totalisator drew £l7 15s a man. The result was — Dosey ... ... ... ... 1 Norman ... ... ... ... 2 Railway Stakes Handicap, of 34 sovs. mile. Mr S. Emraerson’s b m Marie Stuart 6 years ... ... ... ... 1 Mr James Clarke’s b m Half Caste, aged ... ... ... ... 2 Mr A. W. Dillon’s b m Rore, yrs ... 3 Half Caste was the favorite and went off with the lead, followed by Marie Stuart, who was evidently very fit and the most dangerous looking on the course. Nor was she long in asserting herself. She soon went to the front and none of the others were able to dispossess her, and she won easily. Hurdle Race, of SO sovs. 2 miles.
