(Received March 8, 9 p.m.) London, March 6. A severe gale, accompanied by a heavy fall of suow, has been experienced over the greater part of England. Much damage has been caused on land by the wind and snow drifts, and many disasters at sea are reported, owing to the severity of the gale, which raged along the coasts. It is reported that Sir John Henry Lefroy will assume the Governorship of Ceylon for the year, pending the arrival of Sir Arthur Gordon. Intelligence is to hand from Paris that there is every reason to believe that Byrne, who was recently arrested under an extradition* warrant, charged with complicity in the Irish conspiracies, will be at once released by the French authorities. (Received March 9, 1 a.m.) March 8 (!). Jn the House of Commons to-day, a Bill forbidding the use of pigeons at shooting matches was read a second time. (Received March 9, 1 p.m.) March 7. The P. and 0. steamship Ballarat, from Melbourne, January 7th, arrived at Plymouth to-day. The Homeward mails via Naples, which left Melbourne per John Elder on January 24, were delivered here today. (Received March 9,2 p.m.) Paris, March 8. Byrue is still detained in custody pending the arrival of a fresh warrant charging him with complicity in the murder of Field, the juryman, and in the attempt on the life of Judge Lawson. ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. VICTORIA RACING CLUB AUTUMN MEETING. VICTORIAN PORTFOLIOS. THE COLLISION BETWEEN THE MANAPOURI AND TUG SOPHIA. EXHUMATION OF A BODY. (Received March 8, 9 p.m.) Melbourne, March 8. The third day's races of the Victoria Racing Club's Autumn Meeting took place to-day. The Grand Stand Stakes was wou by Willeroo, Sweet William second, Belmont third. The other starters were Commotion and Cunnamulla. There was a great race between the third horses; at the finish, Commotion, who was the favorife, was beaten at the distance. (Received March 9, 1 a.m.) It is now announced that Mr Service takes the portfolio of Minister of Public Instruction (not Berry, as previously telegraphed). Berry becomes Post-master-General, as well as Chief Secretary. In the action, Moss versus the Union Steamship Company, for damages to the tug Sophia by collision with the steamship Manapouri, a verdict has been returned for plaintiff for £6OO. (Received March 9, 12.4 p.m.) March 9. The body of a man named Robert Harding, recently found in the water at Brighton with a wound in his throat, has been exhumed, as there are grave suspicions that deceased met with his death through foul play. (Received March 9, 1 p.m.) Later. It is now believed that Harding committed suicide, and died by drowning after cutting his throat. Parliament stands adjourned to April 3.
