PROPOSED NEW DISTRICT ROADS.
PETITION TO THE WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL. The following is a copy of a memorial to be presented to the Westland County Council at its sitting to-day, in reference to certain proposed new district roads on this goldfield : The memorial of the undersigned ratepayers and others of the Arahura Riding humbly sheweth— That your memorialists, being ratepayers of the Arahura riding, desire to lay before your honorable Council the detrimental effect which the district road your honorable Council are about to make from Sandy's Terrace to debouch or terminate near the Metropolitan Hotel, Seddon street, Kumara, will have upon Dillman’s Town and the vested interests of that place by the creation of a second Dillman’s Town at the rear of Mignonette Flat. Your memorialists beg to draw the attention of your honorable Council to the following : First.—That a pack track be constituted instead of a dray road in continuation of the present Dillman’s Town and Landkin’s road to a line (say) opposite Maher’s shaft,- the construction of which might be beneficial to miners of that particular locality. But your honorable Council will do well to wait until sufficient people have domiciled themselves on the proposed line to justify even the lesser expenditure.
Second.—That the construction of the other portion of the proposed road (as per resolution of your honorable Council in December) will be for the benefit of the Borough of Knraara, and not for the ratepayers of the Arahura Riding.
Third.—Your memorialists believe your honorable Council, in continuing the proposed line of road across Shamrock Flat, will have to trespass on the rights of others which will be attended with the usual following of compensation, i.e., to the Long Tunnel Company and the other mining lease-holders. Fourth.—That in close proximity to the proposed line of road there is a thirty-acre lease; and for divers reasons the road, as proposed, would be very beneficial to this property. Fifth.—As the interest and sinking fund for money for the construction of district roads will have to be borne by the ratepayers of each riding, your memorialists think that in equity it should be a consideration in its expenditure to benefit those who pay the interest.
And your memorialists, as in duty bound, will ever pray. Signed by storekeepers, butchers, bakers, restaurateurs, hotelkeepers, ironmongers, drapers, milliners, bootmakers, hawkers, hairdressers, miners, and others.
