(Received February 4, 10.30 a.m.) It is now definitely known that the vessel ashore at Barwon Heads is the ship Berengaria, from London. She lies on a sandy bottom, and the tugs are now attempting to get her off. It is expected she will be floated without much injury. The passengers and crew have all landed safely. (Received February 5, 0.45 a.m.) February 4. The efforts which were made to float the ship Berengaria have as yet been unsuccessful. The position of the vessel is unchanged, (Received February 5,2 p.m.) February 5. All attempts to float the ship Berengaria, at Barwon Heads, have as yet proved unsuccessful. Three hundred tons cargo have been lightered and a quantity thrown overboard. Of the latter several cases of brandy, chemicals, and furniture floated ashore, and fell into possession of pillagers, who looted the spirits, A scandalous scene, amounting to a wild orgie, ensued, and lasted for several hours. The police were powerless to interfere. In a cricket match commenced here on Saturday between South Melbourne and the St. Kilda clubs, the former scored 629, with only six wickets down. Slight made 271, and Rosser 192. (Received February 6, 1.30 p.m.) February G. The ship Berengaria was successfully floated off last night. Sir Bryan O’Loghlen, Premier, addressed his constituents at Lancefield last night. He justified his administration of the Treasury, and attributed the failure of the loan to the Stock Exchange “ bears and expressed himself as still sanguine that the loan would be floated. He defended the administration of railways by his colleague, the Hon. Mr Bent, but stated that he doubted the utility of the proposed Boards of Management. The speech did not announce any new policy, and was received in a lukewarm manner by the meeting, (Received February 5, 12.5 p.m. Sydney, February 5. Arrived, the Wakatipu, last evening.
