FIRE BRIGADE PRACTICES.
[to the editor.] Sir—What a bore that Fire Brigade is ! Every Wednesday they want us to hold practices! Don't we compare favourably in our attendance with the Rifle Volunteers'? Of course we are both "volunteer" companies; but then ours is harder work, and how much less trouble it is during these sweltering hot days to lay down at home on one's couch, doing a quiet smoke, than to be hugging away with a hook or pumping water only to be wasted to no purpose. Besides, we don't have a drill instructor all the way from Hokitika to come and make a show of us. For my part I have nothing to fear; although the insurance companies will not insure a cent, either on house or furniture, my house is detached, and nay wife is one of the most cautious women I ever saw i
with fire. Then why should I trouble myself about other people's property? Why did I join the Brigade ? It's all bosh about patriotism and love of country. Don't people set fire to their own property sometimes 1 I prefer to enjoy the name only of being a member of the Volunteer Fire Brigade ; let those practice who like. I only want to attend when a dividend is about to be declared.—Yours truly, Ease. Kumara, Jan. 31, 1883.
