Yesterday Mr Bruce, blacksmith, at Rakaia, had occasion to discharge one of his men for some fault, and in revenge apparently the latter waited till the other workmen had gone to dinner and then struck Mr Bruce on the head several times with a sixteen-inch horse rasp. He was rendered quite unconscious, and now lies in considerable danger. The police are endeavoring to find the man, whose name is Armstrong. Blenheim, January 29. An old settler named William Ripe was accidentally killed on Saturday. He was riding along a disused track in the Wairau Valley when his horse bolted and ran into a telegraph post, killing the rider instantaneously. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest.
