Intelligence has been l'eceived that the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone has reached Cannes. He accomplished the journey without undue fatigue, and his health is in a more satisfactory state. (Received January 24, 0.55 a.m.) January 19. A strike of extraordinary magnitude has occurred amongst the employes on the Caledonian Railway Company's lines. The traffic is completely paralysed, and the efforts which have been made to induce the men to return to work have as yet proved unavailing. (Received January 19, 2.50 p.m.) St. Petersburg, January IS. The Emperor Alexander, in his customary New Year's speech, pointed to his speedy coronation. (Received January 20, 2.5 p.m.) Berlin, January 19. A serious explosion occurred to-day at a powder mill in Minden, a strongly fortified town in Westphalia, the wooden portion of the place being shattered to pieces and twelve lives having been lost. [special to press association.] St. Petersburg, January 16. The fire in the circus at Berditchev,, Southern Russia, was caused by an employee throwing a cigarettee among the straw in the stable, which instantly blazed, and the building, in an incredibly short space of time, was enveloped in flames. The audience jumped from the galleries into the ring, and were either killed outright or suffocated.

Large numbers were trampled to death during the fire. Ten horses of the circus galloped into the ring, kicking most furiously, several persons receiving severe injuries from this cause. It is estimated 400 lives were lost. London, January 16. Large numbers of laborers in the west of Ireland are desirous of emigrating to Queensland. New York, January 16. The absconding treasurer of the State of Tennessee, whose defalcations amount to over half-a-million dollars, has been captured and lodged in Washington gaol. January 17. Prince Jerome Bonaparte's manifesto denounced the impotence and incapacity of the present Government of France, as shown by the decadence of the army, trade and public finance of the country, coupled with the increased debt, and it eulogised the plebiscite. The manifesto is generally considered to be ill-timed, and apparently intended to forestall any movement on the part of the Count de Chambord wnd the Legitimist party. Prince Jerome's following has apparently been diminished. Cetewayo has arrived at his home and has met with an enthusiastic reception. The strike among the employes engaged on the Caledonian Railway has impeded the traffic, and, in consequence, several collieries and factories have stopped working. M. Granier de Cassagnac disclaims any knowledge of the manifesto issued by Prince Jerome, and ridicules the action taken by him.
