SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Local School Committee was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening; present —Mr R. J. Seddon (Chairman), Messrs F. Barrowman, Cain, Campbell, Stanton, Yoysey. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The outward correspondence was read and approved of, and the inward read and received.

It was resolved that the Secretary to the Central Board be asked to inform the Committee if he has any reply from Mr W. 0. Patrick (of Port Chalmers), who was recently appointed to take charge of the Westbrook School.

It was resolved that Mr R. J. Seddon be nominated to fill one of the two vacancies occurring in the Central Board of Education. The other nomination to stand over till next meeting of Committee.

The Secretary was instructed to fill up some forms required by the Central Board.

It was resolved that the three highest scholars in each standard receive a certificate of merit.

A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Seddon, Barrowtnan, and Campbell, were appointed to draw up a report of the school for the past year; said report to be read at the annual meeting of householders to be held at the State School on Monday, the 22nd inst., when a new committee is appointed to be elected. A resolution was passed thanking the teachers in the various schools under charge of the committee for the very able manner in which they had discharged their duties, and for the high, state of proficiency attained in their schools during the past year. The Secretary was instructed to request the Central Board to increase the salary of Miss Galland (one of the teachers in the Kuraara State School), the present allowance being, in the opinion of the Local Committee, far too small.

The Secretary was instructed to procure some nearly printed cards, suitable for framing, as certificates of merit awarded at the, annual examination, 1882, for presentation to the scholars to whom said certificates were awarded.

In compliance with a circular from the Central Board, it was resolved that the Chairman inform the householders of Kumara that the first meeting of the new committee must take place on the 24th inst., between the hours of 12 noon and 8 p.tn. —two days after its election.

It was resolved that Mr Nicholson be asked to audit the Committee’s accounts.
