It is reported that Mr Gladstone is seriously indisposed, Dr. Clarke, the Premier's medical adviser, has been summoned to Hawarden. The Right Hon. Dr. Lyon P lay fair has resigned his office as Chairman of Committees in the House of Commons. (Received January 9, 11.15 a.m.) It has been ascertained that Mr Gladstone's indisposition arises from overwork, and his medical adviser has I'ecommended complete rest. Mr Gladstone has consequently abandoned his intended political tour in Midlothian. A serious collision occurred to-day in

the River Mersey, Liverpool, bptween the- Inman line steamship City of Brussels and another vessel. The former sank in deep water shortly after the collision, and ten persons were drowned. It is announced that the remains of the late General Chanzy will be accorded a public funeral at the expense of the State.
