"J. T." —Borneo, though not so long as Madagascar, is the larger of the two islands. Madagascar is 980 miles in length, and 3(30 at its greatest breadth ; its area is estimated at 228,570 square miles. Borneo is about 800 miles in length, and (300 in breadth, and contains an area of 290,000 square miles ; or (51,430 more than Madagascar. In fact, next to Australia, Borneo is the largast island in the world. " J. M." —The quickest passage of any boat from England to the colonies was made by the Orient Company's steamer Austral, which left Plymouth on the ' 20th Blay, last year, and arrived in in Hobson's Bay on the 26th June. This was her first voyage, and it was accomplished, as you will see, in 37
days. The Austral brought papers just a mouth old, but these were forwarded overland to meet her in the Mediterranean. The Liguria did the voyage in 40 days.
