Odd Trick 1 Lesbia ... ... ... 2 Mistaken 3 Champion Stakes, of 25sovs. each, 10 ft., with 1000 added, For 3yrs old and upwards. Weight for age. Commotion was ridden by Trahea, Guesswork by Cracknell, and Navigator by Hales. The other starters were Calma, Segenhoe, and Jessie. The race was a grand one, and was keenly contested by Guesswork and Commotion. The first named led from the start and continued to do so past the stand and round to the back of the course. At abattoirs Jessie took second place from
Commotion, but on passing the stand the second time Commotion had again secured second place, Guesswork still leading the field. That order was maintained to the abattoirs again, when Navigator took third place. Coming up the straight Guesswork and Commotion were leading together, the latter having come up with a fine spurt, followed by Navigator. The three were very close together along the straight, and after a grand race Commotion was landed the winner by a neck, Navigator being close on to the second horse. Time—smins. 26secs. January 2. Government has decided to fix the minimum of the loan about to be raised in London at par, and has telegraphed to the Agent-General accordingly. CRICKET. COMBINED AUSTRALIANS V. IVO BIGHS TEAM. (Received December 30, 10.33 a.m.) Melbourne, December 30. The intercolonial cricket match between the Hon. Ivo Bligh's team and the Australian eleven was commenced to-day. The latter in their first innings scored 251 for seven wickets. Bannerman ... ... The Australian team continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 291 runs. Palmer took seven wickets. The English team being 114 behind their opponents, had to follow on, and at the close of the day's play had scored 11 without the loss of a wicket.
