THE RESIDENCE-AREAS QUESTION.
+ There was a meeting of the Borough Councillors at the Town Hall last evening. Shortly before o'clock his Worship the Mayor (J. O'Hagan, Esq.) took bis seat in the chair. Councillors Barnett, Pollock, Campbell, and Rudkin also took their seats at the table. T!«ie Mayor was about to explain the object of the meeting, when Cr. Campbell said : Before proceeding to business, ho wished to know on what authority this meeting was being held? * The Mayor called upon the Town Clerk to read that portion of the minutes of the proceedings which referred to the subject. It was to the effect that the debate on the motion by the Mayor—" That the r-solution passed by this Council on February 21st, recommending the Warden not to grant residence areas iu Main and Sedilon streets be rescinded, and that the Warden be written to informing him of the fact that this Council has no objection to the granting of such areas." be adjou.med till Monday next (19th inst), at 7.30 p.m. ' Cr. Campbell said this was an illegal meeting; and it would be unfair to councillors and unfair to the public to hold such discutjsiou. Cr. Barnett wished to know if Cr. Campbell or the Mayor was to rule. Cr. Campbell again protested against holding au illegal meeting. The Mayor wish< d to know if this was a catch 1 Cr. Pollock wished to know why the Mayor had sent for a particular councillor—Ct. Burger. No one ever sent for him when he was absent. Why did he not bend for Cr. Home 1 j
Cr. Anderson and Burger here entered the hall, followed shortly afterwards by Cr. Horne. Cr. Campbell repeated that this Was Art illegal meeting; it was n<*t ah adjourned meeting, as shown by the minutes, ft* there was no motion for adjournment) and it could not be Called a special meeting, as no notice had been given. He hud no objection to discuss the question, bat it could not be discussed as a Council. Crs. Campbell and Pollock then vacated their seats. The Mayor said be must decline in the absence of Crs.
