WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Council met at 2 p.m. yesterday • present—The County Chairman, Messrs Dale, Jack, Rose, Hirter, M‘Goldrick, Gnnimoud, M'Whirter. The following report of business is extracted from the West Coast Times ' — OUTWARD CORRESPONDENCE. A large number of urgent telegrams sent to Mr Fitz Gerald and Mr Seddon by the County Chairman, on Various' subjects chiefly connected with votes for public works, were read. The Chairman said he thought it Was his duty to say that neither Mr FitzGerald nor Mr Seddon had sent any answer whatever to his repeated communications, He supposed the members were powerless just now in the matter. Mr Jack moved that a telegram be sent to the members, requesting them to forward a reply. The Chairman pointed out that on
S a fcurday last, he sent urgent telegrams to Messrs Seddon and FitzGerald* M.rt.Rs., informing those gentlemen that the Council would meet on Wednesday following, and requesting them to send what information they could, to be laid before the Council; To those telegrams no answer had been received, Mr Grimmond thought “no news was good news.” The Clerk being asked* said, perhaps* before the meeting wag over, a telegram might be received from Mr Seddon* who seemed to take pleasure in sending startling and dramatic news while the Council Was sitting. - Inward correspondence. o Jift gra “ te ? m 5 r Seddon > d *Wd 27th May, to the effect that the Minister was favorable to appointment of gold receiver at Woodstock ; also asking for certain copies of resolutions re the merging of Kiimara Bofough; Received. ° Letter from Public Works Department, re Christchurch road deviation at Rangiriri.-^.Received. Letter from the Clerk of the Grey Council, stating that Noonan’s ferrjr contract terminated on July 28th.-i Received. Letter from Mr A. Crebaf, Secretary to Kumara Miners* Association, thanking the Council for the sum of £lO. * Received; Letter from the Mines Department, Wellington, re subsidy for Goldsbo* rough deviation, stating that the Govern* ment Would contribute the sum of £240. Received. The Chairman said the work Would cost £I4OO of £ISOO. He had telegraphed to Messrs Seddon and Fitz Gerald dn the matter, but had got no answer. The .Council had done all possible. Mr M‘Whirter aaid that the Minister of Mines had asked the cost of thid' he was told £IOOO, and he distinctly' promised to give £ for £. The Council should not he treated in this way. If the Council called for tenders. for the work, that might have some effect an the Government. The Creek was now backing up on the road and something would have to be done; Mr M'Whirtef moved and the Chairman seconded, that tenders be invited for this work, to be in by next meeting. Mr Dale objected to the Council calling for ten* ders unless prepared to accept one. The motion was lost on a division, the Chairman, Messrs Jack and M’WfairteP voting in the minority. CHRISTCHURCH ROAD DEVIATION. The Chairman moved, “That the work of proceeding with the road devia* tion at Rangiriri, Christchurch road, be dealt with without delay, the General Government have consented to. defray the cost of its construction ; and that as soon as plans and specifications are prepared, the Chairman be empowered to call for tenders for the work; the Public Works Committee to deal with the same as soon as possible.”—Carried* ROAD VROM larrikin’s. The Chairman moved, “That the road overseer be instructed to lay out a branch line of road from the Dillman’s Town and Christchurch road to Larrikin s. The distance of proposed road is 30 chains or thereabouts. Plana and specifications to he prepared by next meeting of the Council.”_CarriedL
