The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 1882.

The s,a. Kennedy, with the San Francisco mails on board, succeeded in crossing the Greymouth bar on this morning’s tide, and the Kttmara and Hokitika portions of the mails will be forwarded hither by the afternoon tram, Mr MacDermott, the postmaster, has informed us that there will be a town delivery here at seven o’clock, and from 7 to 7.30 p.m. letters may be obtained at the Post-office window. The Hokitika portion of the mails will be despatched by special vehicle at seven o’clock. The efforts of the various postmasters to ensure the quickest possible despatch with these mails is highly commendable.

The Christchurch mail and Rugg’s c 'iaches left the Bcaley this morning at the usual hour, and arrived shortly after three o’clock.

Wo have received from Mr Walter Bishop, the publisher, a copy of his “ Guide to Wellington and District.” It is accompanied with a plan of Wellington, showing the port and suburbs of the town. It is replete with information required by travellers, gives good space to set forth the local industries, and tlv> “ Early Reminiscences of Wellington ’ are very interesting. Altogether it is a cheap shilling’s worth of general information.

Owing to the absence of the Rev. W. West and the sickness of one of the elders, there will be no service in the Presbyterian Church to-morrow.

Tenders are required by the Borough Council for forming one chain each two footpaths and a roadway in Tni street. The tug Dispatch, which crossed the bar at Grey month on Thursday evening, could not return on the same tide ; the sea was so rough Capt. Nolan, having once g"f. safely out, did not care to venture back. She probably came in this morning,

as did the Kennedy. Oaptain .Johnson, of the Grafton, does dot consider it expedient to go out till to-morrow morning. The weather forecast is not more favorable, as Captain Edwin wired yesterday to “expect bad Weatherworn any direction betweeh south-east and east and north, with a further fall of the glass and increasing sea.” After the meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday evening, the members sat as the Board of Health, and, after due consideration, passed several accounts for payment. Messrs Girdwood, Lalnnan, and Co. will hold their fortnighly sale at the Preston Yards, Groymonth, on Monday next, when they will offer bullocks, wethers, and porkers, The Gi'eymodth Star reports an accident which occurred on Wednesday last, near the junction of Maori Creek and New River. William Greenway and George Thiers were working in their claim in a tunnel, when the roof came in. Greenway was instantly killed, but Thiers only had his legs covered. About fifty men came to the rescue, and after about five hours’ hard work they managed to release Thiers, but Greenway’s body was not recovered until seven o’clock in the evening. Mr Stratford, coroner, held an inquest at Maori Creek on Thursday. The jury returned a verdict that “The deceased, William Greenway, was accidently and instantaneously killed by a fall of earth, while working in his claim, near the old Twelve-Mile, New River, on the 31st May, 1882.” Persons about to visit Mr Gilbert, dentist, Greymouth, are informed that he is at present on a visit to Westport. The Reefton, Grey, Westport and Nelson members interviewed the Minister for Public Works with regard to the Nelson road and mail service. The road is under consideration. The deputation suggested that tenders be called in September for a bi-weekly service between Foxhill and Reefton, and a tri-weekly from Reefton to Greymouth ; alternate tenders for a tri-weekly service to Lyull; a daily service from Reefton to Greymouth.
