[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, May 31. A man named John Mortimer was struck by a crane in Montgomery’s sawmill to-day. His right arm was broken, his right elbow dislocated, and his right leg broken. Dunedin, June 1, To-day, the bridge over the Clutha river at Alexandra south, in the Vincent County, was formally opened for traffic. It has cost something about £20,000. THE MILLER’S FLAT MURDER. Dunedin, May 31. Fuller particulars of the Miller’s Flat murder are now to hand, and show that Roggiero was nursing a child by tbe fire when Kitto sh t at him through the window, the bullet inflicting a mortal wound in its passage through the lungs. Roggiero cried out to his wife, “I am shot; run for help." She then ran toCloogh’s house close by, Oloogh acompanied her and a man named Murray, and they ran to the house. The second shot fired by Kitto missed Murray by a hair’s breadth arid struck Cloogh on the waist. By this time all the neighbol’s were aroused, but imagining that Kitto might be waiting about to do further shooting, they got into the house of a Mr Smith and barricaded themselves in. Mrs Roggiero also took refuge there. After some time a man named M‘Clay ventured into Ruggiero’s house, in which at the time were only Roggiero and the infant, Roggiero had menaged to drag himself to the bed, whilst the infant lay on the floor in convulsions of screaming. M‘Clay then proceeded for further assista-'Ce. Meanwhile Kitto had pulled away across the river, and then walked nine miles into Roxburgh to give himself up to the police. He stated that he was a Jew, and said he shot his son-in-law for interfering with his religion. Ruggiero leaves five young children. Ar. the inquest to-day a verdict of “ Wilful murder” was returned ag.-.inst Kitto, who is now in Lawrence gaol.
