LATEST ESTGLISH. NEWS. London, May 15. In the House of Commons last night, ft bill was introduced by the Government for dealing with the question of payment of arrears of rent in Ireland. The measure provides that Irish Church surplus should he appropriated for the purpose of clearing tenants of their
liabilities. The Church fund will thus be entirely exhausted.
May 16. It has transpired from reliable sources that before his release from Kilmainham Gaol, Parnell promised that agrarian outrages in Ireland should cease, and undertook to co-operate with the Government to cause that end.
The May-June series of Colonial wool auctions was opened to-day with a catalogue of 6300 bales. There was a fair attendance of buyers, and the bidding was maiked with good spirit. The closing prices of last auctions were well maintained. The series will close on the 4th July.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Melbourne, May 16. The doctors have now decided that the case of sickness at Carlton is not small-pox.
In the Legislative Assembly last night, Mr Berry's amendment to the Address-in-Reply to the Governor's speech, amounting to a vote of want of confidence in the Ministry, was rejected by 54 to 29, and the address was then passed.
May 17. The reduced tariff for telegraphic messages between Australia and New Zealand will take effect from the Ist June next.
Sydney, May 17. The ship Cashmere, 1338 tons, while in chirge of a pilot, swung upon a sandbank in Newcastle harbor last evening, and is expected to become a total wreck.
THE AUSTRALIANS' FIRST MATCH,
London, May 15. The first match of the Australian cricketers in England was commenced to-day, at Oxford, against an eleven of the local University. The weather was fine and there was a lively wicket. The Australians went in first, and the innings closed for 362. The following were the highest scores : Massif, (c) 206; Giff-n, (b) 19; Jones, (c) 39; Garrett (b) 41 ; Palmer, (b) 18. Murdoch was bowled for nil. Massie batted splendidly; but was badly missed early in his innings. The play of the Australians was much admired, and the fielding of the University players was excellent. At the close of the day's play the Oxford Eleveu had two wickets down for five runs. May 16. The cricket match, Australians v. Oxford University, was resumed today. i : at..Qxford., , The Home team continued their first innings, which closed for a t'ofcaTpf 189, as against 362 of the Australians. Shaw contributed the highest score, 78. The University men followed on their second innings, and when stumps were drawn they had put together 119 runs for 4 wickets. There was a large attendance at the match, and the weather was fine. The Australians met with a cordial reception when they went into the field. Their bowling and fielding during the day was excellent, and both elicited much applause.
