WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.
At the late meeting of the Westland County Council, the following business pertaining to this district is reported by the West Coast Times to have been transacted ; CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from Mr A. Creber, asking for a grant of £lO to aid the Kumara Miners’ Committee in defraying expenses connected with the late water dispute. On the motion of Mr Jack the amount was voted. A letter from Overseer Kerr, suggesting that tenders should be called for the maintenance of the Teremakan bridge was received. A letter from Mr A. Creber, stated that the miners of the Kumara district intended to make one more effort to obtain increased water supply in the Arabura district, and asking for the assistance of the Council. The letter was received. A letter was received from the Town Clerk, Kumara, enclosing a resolution of the Ivumara Borough Council, affirming the desirability of merging the Borough in the Council. TEREMAKAU PERRY. The Chairman moved, “ That tenders be invited for twelve months for maintenance of lower ferry on Tet'emaknu liver, by next meeting of the Council.” After a long discussion, Mr Grimmond moved an amendment that the sum of £l2 should be voted as a subsidy to Mr Noonan. The amendment was lost on the voices, and a postponement carried. TEREMAKAU BRIDGE. The Chairman moved,” “That tenders be invited for twelve months for the purpose of keeping the Teremakan bridge free from snags.” Carried. MERGING OF KUMARA Mr Seddon moved, “That in accordance with the powers conferred by section 354, Municipal Corporations Act, 187 G, and the laws amending the same, the County Council of Westland do hereby petition his Excellency the Governor to dissolve the Borough of Kumara, and that such petition shall he drawn up, signed, and forwarded to his Excellency the Governor in manner as provided by law. That the terms and conditions upon which this Council do agree to have the said Borough dissolved are as follows.—l. That the County Council of Westland shall at all times keep the roads, streets, and footpaths within the limits of the boundaries of the Borough as at present defined, in good repair. 2. And shall within such limits expend in repairs and improvements no less a sum than that received from fees and licenses under the Licensing Act, 1881. 3. That the said County Council of Westland shall take over all assets and liabilities of the said Borough of Kumara ” The Chairman seconded and strongly supported the resolution. After considerable discussion, and the negativing of an amendment to adjourn the discussion of the question, until the following day, the motion was carried without dissent. KUMARA LICENSES. Mr Seddon moved, “That this Council will, in the event of the Borough of Kumara being dissolved and becoming part of the County of Westland, refund to all p rsons who may have taken out licenses under the Licensing Act, 1881, the difference charged as between that paid by them whilst in the Borough, and that to which they would only have been called upon to pay had they been in the Countv, at the time the licenses were issued.” After a long discussion the motion was carried, with the addition of the words, “ provided the license money has been previously paid to the Council.” EXPENSES OF DELEGATES. Mr Jack moved, “ That this Council nndei take to defray the expenses of Messrs Seddon and Fitz Gerald, while «t Wellington in the interest of the miners, relative to the chaiges for Avater and sludge-channel, and also on business connected with the interests of the Westland County.” He. thought that Messrs Seddon and Fitz Gerald had been put to considerable expense. Mr Seddon having explained that he had already received the sum of £2O from the Miners’ Association, left the chunb'T. Mr Jack, asked leave to add the words, that the sum of £SO e ch be voted to Messrs Fitz Gerald and Seddon. Mr M‘Whir ter ridiculed the proposition to vote equal amounts. Mr Seddon travelled from Kumara to Wellington and Auckland, while /Mr Fitz Gerald merely made a trip.’ from Wanganui to Wellington. Several other Councillors objected to the sums proposed by Mr Jack. Finally it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Hirter, to vote £3O to Mr Saddon, and £2O to Mr Fitz Gerald. 1
miners’ RIGHTS. Ml- Dale moved, “ That the Government be respectfully requested to reduce the miner’s right, from one pound to ten shillings per annum, 11 Mr feeddon Seconded the resolution which Was carried without dissent. CHARITABLE aid. Mr Seddon moved, “That this Council respectfully notify to the Government tnat it cannot make provisions for hospital and charitable aid purposes this year, and request the Government to make provision for same in the County of Westland.’' Mr Hirter seconded the motion, which Was, after some discussion, carried* Boring machine. Mr Seddon moved, “ That a rock and drift boring machine be procured for prospecting purposes at a cost not to exceed £IOOO, and that application bo at once made to the Government for subsidy thereon, in accordance with vote and regulations of last session/' Mr M‘Whirter seconded.—Carried* humaba road To Beach. r ,Seddon moved, “That plans and specifications he prepared by next meefring for construction of road front Seddon street, Etumai-a, to ocean beach.’—Carried. CHeensTone boad. Mr M'Whirter moved, “ That tenders be invited by next meeting for construction of deviation of the Greenstone road at Goldsborough on the £ for £ vote."—Carried.
