BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, May 14. A canister containing blasting powder, was discovered by the police last night on the side of the Mansion House. No trace has yet been obtained of the perpetrators of the intended outrage. The Daily News publishes a paragraph in this morning’s issue stating that Gladstone is expected to resign the Chancellorship of the Exchequer. In the House of Lords this evening, Earl Granville, referring to the present position of the affairs of Egypt, stated that England and France had mutually decided upon the line of action which should be taken in certain contingencies, but his Lordship hoped that peaoe and prosperity would yet be secured to that country without resorting to force of arms. A report is current that an outbreak of small-pox has occurred at Carlton. The doctors, however, differ as to the exact disease, which is believed to be only a case of chicken-pox.
