NATIVE TRUST COMPENSATION COURT.
A sitting of tbe Compensation Court was held at the Resident Magi trate’s Court, Grey mouth, on Monday last, before his Honor Chief justice Pi-fender* gast and Messrs Hackett and Kennedy, assessors.; The claim for compensation (amounting beet ween £BOOO and £9000) arises out of Government having taken certain portions of the Native Reserve for the purpose of public Works. Mr Connoly, assisted by Mr Perkins, appeared for the Native Trust, and Mr Pitt on behalf of Government. It was admitted that certain lands had been taken as stated. The chief point requiring adjustment was the fixing of a basis for awarding compensation. The lands taken by the Public Works De* paitment comprise about acres, hear Chapel street (Tivoli), land along the river frontage, and at the Tidal Creek. The Court was occupied all Monday and Tuesday in hearing evidence. Amongst those examined were—Mr A. Mackay, Messrs Gleeson, Mo-s, Capleu, and Girdwood. Yesterday, bis Honor Chief Justice Prendergast gave the award of the assessors in the above case as follows ;—•
