[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, April 16. Six* George Grey arrived this morning. Nothing further has transpired regarding the political situation, Wanganui, April 16. The funeral of Mr Frank Parkes (who died very suddenly from heart disease at Ngarue on Friday evening) took place here at 3 o’clock to-day. There was a very large following, the deceased being very generally xespected. He was one of the oldest settlers in the district, bis parents having arrived in the colony in 1842, when he was only seven years of age. He leaves a wife and family, mostly grown up, to mourn his loss. The sad intelligence of his death, when it reached town on Saturday, caused general sorrow and regret. Christchurch, April 14. There was to have been a trial of A. Hornsby and Sous’ hedge-cutting machine this morning, hut it could not he got out of the Exhibition building as the doors were too narrow. There was a fair attendance waiting to see the trial. New Plymouth, April 14. At the inquest on the body of Mr Halse, at Waitara, yesterday, it was adduced that deceased’s partner had only recently become aware of Mr HalSu’s position, and on speaking to him he appeared to be much distressed and agreed to call a meeting of his creditors. It was customary for deceased to spend Wednesday at Waitara, where he did business, so nothing was thought of his going down thei*e on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning he was seen by several, who said he looked distracted, and during the latter part of the day kept to his house. His partner having some business with deceased went down by train yesterday morning to Waitara, and found the door of the house open. He went into deceased’s bedroom and there found him lying on the bed face down and dead. Both arms were underneath the chest, with the hands clenched. Deceased had his boots and coat off, and a tumbler containing a few crystals of strychnine was on a chest of drawers, A letter was also there addressed to his son-in-law, in which deceased had written, “I have thought the matter out, or at least endeavored to do so, and matters will be facilitated by my stepping aside. My head is bursting. My farewell end.’’ On searching deceased a half ounce phial containing Strychnine properly labelled “poison” was found. It had been made up and been in deceased’s possession for fifteen years. The jury, after a short consultation, returned a verdict that deceased died from the effects of strychnine administered by himself during a fit of temporary insanity. Auckland, April 12. James Conway was arrested at Oxford, Waikato, for horse stealing at Hawkes Bay, He escaped from the custody of Detective Doolan near Cambridge, and escaped. The body of Charles Lee, drowned on Good Friday, was found at Stocks Point
April 14:. Frederick Ellisson, who dislocated his spine by a fall from the roOf of a house, died to-day. He leaves a Vnfe &n'd four children. Michael Koeffe, in delirium treiheiis, drowned himself in a creek at Kaukapakapa, Bay of Islands. WANGANUI REGATTA. Wanganui, April 14. The annual regatta was held to-day. The weather was magnificent, and a great concourse of people turned out to witness it. Scullei’s Race—Cornish, 1. Senior Outrigger—W.R.C.’s Rata, 1: U.B.C.’s Transit, 2. Volunteer Race Wanganui City Rifles, Manawatu, 1. Fire Brigades—Rata, 1. A match for £,5 a-side has been arranged to take place to-morrow between the Faugh a Ballagh and Prince, first and second in the sailing race.
