[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Christchurch, April 9. The Exhibition building is finished, and to-day was occupied in cleaning it up, hanging banners, curtains, &c. The exhibits are not all in, but work has been going on day and night, and an excellent show will be made to-morrow, much better in fact than was at first expected. The procession to-morrow will contain between 4000 and 5000 men, and will be a very striking feature of the day’s proceedings. Owing to the rain the Volunteers’ church parade did not come off, arid the men occupied the morning in drill at the shed instead. It has been raining off and on all day, but the weather now shows signs of clearing up by to-raorow. The rain is a benefit rather than otherwise, as the town after some weeks of drought was very dusty. Denton, the lecturer, has for the last two weeks up north hunting out fossils, «kc. Fairburn, surveyor, who was committed for trial for breaking and entering the residence of the Rev. William Gittos, Kaipara. It appears that when discovered in the house he was horsewhipped by Gittos’s two daughters and knocked down by the servant man, who came to their assistance. A lady who was passing threw a rope to him, and after a little difficulty he was rescued, though much exhausted. PROBABLE RESIGNATION OF THE PREMIER. Wellington, April 9. The Premier has been advised by his medical adviser to relinquish office, owing to the bad state of his health, and Dr. Grace understands that Mr Hall agrees with bis advice. The following is a letter written to Major Atkinson by Dr. Grace : “ April 4th, 1882, “Dear Atkinson— l write to ask that you shall relieve Mr Hill from all responsibility in regard to public business at the earliest date possible. You know that I have been prognosticating for more than 12 months that he must infallibly break down.
