The charge of defrauding a mOney lender which was preferred agaiust the Marquis of Huntley, for whose apprehension a warrant was issued in January last, has been withdrawn. Information has been received to-day from Ireland to the effect that a Westmeath landlord named Smy'the was fired at, and the shot killed Mistress Smythe, a relative. The latest intelligence to hand re■gardlflg the loss of the steamships Ditoro and Yrure Bat states that 46 persons have lost their iiVes by the disaster. Of these 30 were on board the Yrure Bat> and 16 on the Duoro. April 4. In the House of Commons last ni<dit the Right Hdn. W. E. Gladstone made a lengthy and vigoious speech lip'bn the position of affairs in Ireland. In the course of his remarks he stated that the present situation could not be matched in the history of Ireland for the last 50 years, and that in fact a social revolution exists in that country at the present time; The Premier further stated that the crimes which had beeen committed were distinctly traceable to the influence of the Land League, and he charged Healy, member for Wexford, with adding to the disorder by his inflammatory language. Government; Mr Gladstone added, fully appreciated the danger of tile situation, but they Would choose their own time for making proposals to the House.
