BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 3. It has transpired that the respite which.has been granted to Dr. Lawson is due. to the exertions of the United States Government. It is now alleged that Dr. Lawson is insane. The sculling match between Hanlan and Boyd for .£IOOO was rowed on the Tyne to-day, and resulted in a victory for the Canadian by four lengths. The contest is described as being a hollow race, Hanlan winning without difficulty. The members of the Institution of Civil Engineers entertained Sir Henry Parkes, Premier of New Sonth Wales, at a dinner to-day. Mr C. Horgory, formerly President of the Society, presided, and in proposing the health of their guest warmly eulogised the enterprise and industry of the colonies. Sir Henry Parkes, in replying to the toast, predicted an amazing growth for Australia in the future, and at the same time expressed his belief that the colonies would continue to cling to the mother country, and maintain the integrity of the Empire. St. Petersburg, April 3. The announcement of the execution of the murderers of General Strelmkow, Public Prosecutor at Odessa, was premature. They were respited at the last moment. Telegrams are to hand reporting that the steamers Yrure Bat, 1558 tons, of Bilbao, and the Duoro (sic), came into collision off the West Coast of Spain in the neighborhood of Cape Pinisterre. Both vessels foundered. 35 of the passengers and crew of the DnOro were saved, and 97 of those on board the Yrure. ... Later. Further telegrams are to hand regarding the collision of the steamships Duoro and Yrure Bat, off the Spanish Coast. It is now stated that 120 lives, were saved from the Duoro alone, . but that the captain and officers perished. Both vessels had a large number of passengers on board, but the total loss of life has not yet been ascertained.

Point de Galle, April 3. The P. and O. Company’s steamship Assam, homeward bound with the Australian cricketers on board, arrived here to-day. With the exception of M'Donnell, who has been ill, but is now recovering, they are all in good health.
