HANLAN V. BOYD AND TRICKETT.
The race between Hanlan and Bdyd for the ■Championship of England and £SOO a side is td take place on the River Tyne, Newcastle, England, today. Hanlan has been training up t 6 the middle of March on the Thames, In view of his match with THckfctt, oh similar terms and fcoridkiohs, oh the Ist of next month. The Canadian must feel pretty sure of a victory over Boyd to arrange for a second championship bf England match within a. calendar month from the completion of the first. Of the Canadian’s condition before leaving for England, the Toronto Mail said “ Hanlan leaves Toronto in the best of health, having taken great care of himself during the past. fbw itionths. He turns the scale at 1751 b,, and expects to row Boyd at 1601 b. He will be uni accompanied in his trip by any frifend or attendant from Canada, and will nbt even take a boat with him. A shell built by Q. and J. Warm will be forwarded at the same time that they send Boyd’s and he will also hafe a boat built by Swaddle add Winship.” R; W. Boyd’s best public performance, we believe, was defeating J. Higgins in 1877. But Elliott in the following > ear, and Hanlan in 1879, also both beat Higgins.
In reference to, the match with Trickett, the race will be rowed on the Thames on the Ist May. Both meli have commenced training oil the ThanieS and as the spring season should suit Tackett much oetter. there is every probability that he will be a much inl ; proved man when next he meets the Canadian. .Mr C; A: W. Lett; an' did Australian, has been acting forTn’ckettj whilst a Mr Innes appears to have represented the Canadian. These gentlemen have been carrying on a newspaper conflict in the London man, on the subjetit Of thO thatch, Mr Lett ridiculing the idea of Hanlari fixing the stakes for so laVgO d sunt a side, hintiiig thdt the motive actuating the Canadian was to avoid d match and not to make one. Mr InneS replied at length, stating that he did all in his power to induce Hanlan to make the match j that the latter was willing to row at Toronto, hiit iiot at St. Louis. He also ofiers to match Ross against the Australian for £2OO a side; and would in addition bac& Largan and Goodwin, twt) English scullers, each to row Trickett over thO Thames champion course for £IOO d side. The latter challenge was regarded as “ blow,” and as Mr Innes's letter was written towards the end oi! January, the literary combatants would have had a whole month to answer each other before the business was concluded; That is now satisfactorily settled sd far, but in the event of Trickett winning it is almost certain that a de? ciding match would follow, to settld once and for ever the claims of .the rival champions.
