JONG GOU To his Special and Very Particular Friends

[Per favor of the Kumara Times,] Listen ! children of the Flowery Land ! while X address you. Know then that I am a mandarin with three tails, and am high ami mighty in the laud. J know all about water-races, dams, and sludge-channels, and am placed in authority so that I can give my Chinese brotheis great advantages over the l-atbarians, who are d'ggiflg pitfalls for me on evety side. They shall not prevail; and when I have overcome mine enemies, then, oh brethren, will I minister to your wants. Tlier. will we have the land to ourselves—the gold, the silver, the precious stones, and particularly the water, not one drop of which will the barbarians have to cool their tongues wiihal.
