Ratepayers are notified that all who have not paid rates now due will, at the expiration of the present month, be placed on the defaulters' list, and be struck off the Burgess Roll. Commander Edwin wired yesterday afternoon as follows :—" Bad weather is expected between N. and E. to S.E. ; glass further fall, and increasing sea." Several residents of this district who recently visited the Otira describe the appearance of the Gorge as truly magnificent. The mountain sides are fairly ablaze with the crimson blossoms of the rata; while at the same time the ribbonwood, with its delicate flowers, adds an additional charm to the grand scene. Those whose leisure permits of a trip across the mountains at this season of the year, are truly to be envied.
The Union Company's steamer Alhambra will not leave Melbourne until Saturday next, the 18th instant. Her date of departure from West Coast ports, for Melbourne direct, is consequently extended to Wednesday, the 29th inst. Elsewhere Mr W. S. S. Stanton, of Cape Terrace, tenders thanks to a number of sympathising friends who came to his assistance during sore family trouble and bereavement.
The friends of Mr Scott Irvine met at Mr Foley's hotel, Westbrook, last Tuesday evening, to bid farewell and God speed to that gentleman, who is about to leave for his native land of hill and heather. The room was well filled with well-wishers from Dillman's Town, Kumara, Cape Terrace, Westbrook, and Greenstone. Mr John MlLaren occupied the chair, and, after a very able and feeling address, presented to the guest of the evening a beautifully illuminated testimonial and a very handsome gold albert.' Mr Irvine, in very appropriate terms, returned thanks. The company spent a most enjoyable evening, with songs, anecdotes, and "the cup that cheereth the heart of man," until " Anld Lang Syne" brought the proceedings to a termination. The Licensing Committees in some parts of the colony have expressed verydecided opinions upon what they call mere licensed grog-shops. In Christchurch a list was supplied to the committee, of hotels where nothing but a bar trade seemed to be done, and obstacles were placed in the way of people desiring other accommodation.. It was decided to make
strict inquiry into the matter, and if it was f dtthd that the facta -were as stated, to consider the advisability of refusing the licenses. William Brown, who was charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Reefton, on Saturday last, that lie did, between the 28th and 30th of August last, incite one Silas Gibson to cut away a punt, the property of Mr Archer, at the Inangahua landing, was, after hearing the evidence of Silas Gibson (who had already been committed to take his trial on that charge), liberated from custody.
