DEBATING SOCIETY.

As we announced in Saturday’s issue the nucleus of a debating society has been formed in Kumara, and to-night, in the Church of England parish room, Seddou street, the first debate will take place, at eight o’clock. At a meeting held last Monday evening, the Rev. J. Holland, who appears to be taking an active part in the management, laid the following subjects before the society for debating upon, and asked the members to take up any subject the} T wished. 1. Was the annexation of Zululaud advisible ? 2. Was the evacuation of Candahar advisible 1 3. Is total abstinence more conducive to health than moderate drinking? 4. Would it be advisible to do away with the present law respecting breach of promise ? 5. Was the beheading of Charles the First justifiable ? 6. Is it advisible to do awav with capital punishment? 7. Is the present mode of licensing committees the best mode for controling the liquor traffic ? 8. Is it advisible to admit Chinese in . . large numbers to this colonv 1 9. Is the present law of free trade, as established in England, good for the country ? 10. Would it be well to abolish the unpaid magistracy iu this Colony i The third subject is the one which is to be’ discussed this evening, viz., “ Is total abstinence more conducive to health than moderate drinking?” Dr. Porter will uphold the affirmative view of the question; and Mr Ha tie tile negative. Thu-re are many geitflcmfeu up the Lead who are competent to deal With several of these Questions; and we ! hope to hear of many of them being ! discussed.
