LATEST FOREIGN NEWS. Capetown, March 8. Telegrams are to hand from the Transvaal stating further severe fighting had taken place between the Boers and the natives under the Chief Montsima, residing beyond the boundary fixed by the Convention. The Boers twice attacked Montsima, hut were repulsed on each occasion with heavy loss. —♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, March 9. The second day’s races of the Victorian Racing Club Autumn Meeting came off to day at Flemington. For the Australian Cup, twenty-two horses started, namely First Water, Hesperian, Belladrum, Suwarrow, Pollio, Odd Trick, Waterloo, Napper Tandy, Royal Maid, Coriolanus, Wellington, Crystal, Saunterer, Blue Ribbon, Sweet William, Attache, Gloucester, Navrabri, Queen, Weslbury, Elsinore, and Duchess. The betting was 2 to 1 against Sweet William, and 10 to 1 against any other. The race resulted us follows ; Pollio 1 Wellington ... ... 2 Sweet William ... ... 3 Duchess made all the running for nearly two miles, but Pollio, Wellington and Sweet William, came to the front at the straight and made a desperate race to the post, width they passed in the order named ; time four minutes and half a second. The steamship Te Anau sailed yesterday afternoon, for the Bluff. The Union Company’s steamship Alhambra, arrived from the Bluff this morning. The steamship Lindus from London, which went ashore at the heads has been floated. RETURN MATCH. —AUSTRALIA V. ENGLAND. Melbourne, March 10. The return match between Shaw’s All England and combined Australian teams commenced here to-day. The weather was very tine, and the wicket was lively. The Englishmen went first to the wickets, and at the adjournment for luncheon had scored 63 for the loss of two wickets, Ulyett being not out for 30, and Bates for 10. The visitors continued their innings until time was called, and had then put together 282 for the loss of seven wickets.
