The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, MARCH 6, 1882.
A PUBLIC MEETING of the burgesses of Kumara is called by his Worship the Mayor, for to-morrow evening, 7th instant, to protest against the unfair demand attributed to the local waterrace management of demanding payment of moneys in advance for use of sludge-channel, and for water supplied to clarims; and also to protest against the miners being stopped from working at a moment’s notice, before even they bad an opportunity of knowing what the water-race management required of them. The following telegrams on the subject have been kindly handed to us for publication : To the Hon. the Minister of Mines, Wellington. I received no reply to my telegram last week re construction of upper Kapitea dam. The vote lapses at the end of this month unless tenders are called. The demand for payment in advance for use of sludge-channel for water is a direct violation of terms originally agreed upon with miners. Do countermand the instruction, otherwise it will prove disastrous to the place. R. J. Seddon. Kumara, March Gth, 1882. To 0. Wakefield, Esq., Secretary of Mines, Wellington. Evidently not understood my telegram. Miners were sluicing into finished portion of sludge-channel. Did you send orders for them to be stopped. Reply also if upper Kapitea dam is to be constructed. R. J. Seddon. Kumara, March 6th, 1882. To R. J. Seddon, Esq., M.H.R., Kumara. Your telegram of 27tb February, as to water-supply report until this has now been received, and forwarded to the Hon. Mr Rolleston at Auckland. Oliver Wakefield, Under-Secretary for Goldfields. Wellington, March Gth, 1882.
