The old post office here was abandoned hy the department yesterday, and its demolition will commence tomorrow, preparatory to commencing the erection of a new brick building. The Government schooner Kohimarama, on her way from Auckland to Stewart’s Island, to enforce the protection of the seal fisheries, is undergoing a thorough overhaul here. A sergeant and two officers leave here to-night for Port Underwood, it is understood, with a view of making a certain arrest there in connection with a mysterious robbery which occurred here some time ago. Christchurch, March 1. The School of Art commenced today with 17 pupils, mostly ladies. A fresh case of assault has been reported to the police; ftlso on Saturday nigh I, and apparently by the same sang who committed those already referred to. NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING AT NELSON; Nelson, Marbh 1. There was rain again this morning, hut it cleared up during the afternoon. The morning was occupied tiring the Wellington match, and the first ranges of the Marlborough and Union matches in the afternoon. The last range for the Marlborough match, which completed the scores for the Rifle Championship was fired. A large number of spectators were present, and some little excitement occasioned, when Hutchinson and Cooper who were a tie up to the la t range fired. Cooper fe 1 off, but Hutchison fired steady and with his last shot required a birlseye, which he was successful in making. This made him tie with Parnell. Hutchison having made the largest score in the match takes the belt. Paynter who fell away yesterday, improved this afternoon and secured fourth prize. On the result of the. Championship being made known, Hutchison was hoisted shoulder high and carried off' the field. The fou r highest aggregates for the Belt are Hutchison, Otago, 210, who takes the Belt, the Association’s Gold Star, and .£ls; Purnell, Wanganui, 210, Assoi iatiou’s Silver Star and £7 10s; Rimington, Wanganui, Association’s Silver Star and £o\ Paynter, Nelson, £2 10s.
