[nk'v Zealand chess association. 1 Wellington, February 27. The property tax paid at the Wellington office, added to the sums ad vised as having been paid at the Post Office, amounts to fifiy-five thousand pounds (£55,000;. The second instalment will be due on the first March, after which day the 10 per cent, penalty will lie strictly enforced. It is believed that many people intend paying both instalments on Wednesday, and it is expected that there will be a ru.'h on that day in the post offices at the larger towns. LEASING THE OTAGO RUNS. Dunedin, February 27. The sale of the Otago inns began t - d >y, and at six o’clock, when an adjournment was made till to-morrow, about 100 out of the 170 had been disposed of. The total rental realised today was £ 10,000, which is one thousand over the upset put npm the whole number. On an average about twice the upset juice was obtained. In some cases as much as £IO6O was realised where the upset price was £300; £290 where the upset was £250; ,£490 where the upset was £7O; and so forth. In the majority of instances the f.inner lessees re-purohased, and where tins was not the Case, the jmrchasers belonged to the run-holding class. The former rental was about £20,000, so that judging by to-day's results quite three times that amount is likely tu be obtained.

February 28. The sale of the leases of the Otago runs were concluded to-day. Out of 170 offered, only three were passed in. The total sum realised by the sale whs £68.851. Thd present rentals amount to £27,659, and the total upsets fixed were £37,216, so that the sale must be looked upon as satisfactory, certainly altogether beyond anticipations.
