THE VOLUNTEERS.
The usual monthly inspection of the Kumara Rifle Volunteers took place last evening, at the Drill Hall, Lieut. Spence in command ; a good number were in attendance. After the usual evolutions were gone through, Sergt. Sumsion was called to the front and piesented, amidst great applause, with the New Zealand war medal, in recognition of his services during the Waikato war some years ago, Mr J. Hannah, jeweller, of this town, very liberally presented to the company for competition, a silver cup. The announcement of the presentation was received with great applause, and a unanimous vote of thanks was accorded to Yol. Hannah for his gift. The first competition for the silver watch, &c., which took place last Saturday week, was won by Yol. Harre, with a seme of 71 (including 18 points handicap). Last week’s competition, as will be seen below, was won by Lieut. Davies, with the very excellent score of 75 from scratch, as follows ;
