FOUR CHILDREN BURNED TO DEATH. Dunkdin, February 21. A fire broke out in a .small wooden house in Smith street, near the corner of Dowlir.g stieet, shortly after four o'clock this morning, by which four children were burm-d lo death. The house was occupied by Julius Bessiki, his wife, and four children, who all slept upstairs. The fire, it appears, broke out on the ground floor, and the family weie not aroused till it broke through the H,or. Bessiki and his wife got out through the window, ieavinjr the children in bed, but it was not known f--r some time that there was anyone in the house, as little attention was paid to the maddening screams of M>s Bess'ki. When the brigade arrived, however, the house was entirely enveloped in flames, and it would have beeu too late to render any

assistance. The names of the fontchildren burnt were Francis Bessiki, aged 8 ye*rs ; Minnie Bessiki, 6 years; Martha Bessiki, 4 years; and Thomas Creft, aged 13 years. The two-storey house adjoining, occupied by Mr Gtvenslade, who is the owner of the property, was completely gutted. The building was insured in the Norwich Union for .£3OO, but Mr Greenslade who is owner, estimates his loss at considerably above that amount, as the furniture was not insured. The bodies of the four children have been recovered.
