THE OARSMAN MESSENGER.
«. A correspondent of the Lyttelton Times writes from Wellington re the Messenger-Carter swindle of which our telegrams have made mention :—“The
surroundings of the affair are decidedly suspicious. Mes'enger and Floyd have been more than a month in New Zealand, the former rowing under an assumed name, when on February 3rd a telegram was sent by the Press Association from Auckland stating that ‘ Floyd lias received a telegram from Messenger, the Au.stalian oarsman, notifying that he is coming to New Zealand, and lias asked him to ai range a match with Hearn if po.-sii.le. Mess> 11ger has some idea of settling and following his calling as a boatbnilder in the colony.’ This telegram therefore refers to the ‘intention’ of Messenger to come to a place where he has been for upwards of a month. Messenger left Auckland for Wellington under the name of Carter, and was known as such 011 board the Wanaka, and his boat was entered on the ship’s papers as the property of Carter. It may be mentioned that Hearn tried conclusions with Messenger in Melbourne, and was beaten by him, and that previously to that Hearn, in a contest with White, of Mercury B iy, was victorious; so that it is not likely' White would have so readily consented to pull against Messenger at Auckland had he known who he really was.”
