[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Wellington, February 16. Mr Saunders, a well known contractor, has sent to Sydney for a large number of laboring men, and they are expected to arrive here by the next trip of the Wakatipu. The wages he offers are highter than in Sydney, and the hours less. It is alio stated that several other contractors are sending to New South Wales for men. Dunedin, February 15, A girl named Duncan, alias Glasset, 14 years old, was charged with forgery at Palmerston, She made an attempt to cut her throat with a penknife in the police cell there. She was prevented doing so, only inflicting a scratch. She has been committed for trial.
