Auckland, February 6. The City of Sydney sailed from San Francisco on the 15th January. She arrived at Auckland after an uneventful voyage. Passengers—Mrs Shavher, infant, and nurse; J. Herepath, C. D. Protoniski, Corliss, Frear, Mrs C. J. Fairfax, J. A. Fairfax, Misses Fairfax (two), and two steerage; 25 passengers for Sydney. February 7. Tire Wanaka sailed this forenoon with the southern English mail. J. A. Fairfax, of the Sydney Morning Herald, arrived by mail steamer, and it is said he intends making a tour of the Colony. The mail steamer brought a number of quail and grouse fur the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Dunedin, February 6. Waldemann has been committed on a charge ot attempting to set lire to his private house on the terrace at Queenstown. February 7. Robert Findlay has been committed for trial lor attempted suicide. Blenheim, January 7* The body of a man about 35 years of age was found in Opawa River this morning. It is unidentified as yet, Christchurch, February 6. The police have been making a raid on the sly grog-sellers, the means of detection being two constables dressed in plain clothes, who entered the houses and called for drink, as though ordinary customers. In one case a b iarding-house-keeper was fined £2O. The keeper of an eating house was able to prove that he got the money for the drink and sent out for it to a neighboring hotel, charging Is per bottle for his trouble, which the bench held to be a valid manner of conducting business, and sufficient defence. In another instance a man entered a boarding-house drunk, and was supplied with more liquor, in respect to which defendant produced a witness to swear he had sent to an hotel for. The Resident Magistrate said it was a most disgraceful case, hut on the evidence he could not convict. February 7. The Exhibition Committee have passed a resolution affirming the desirability of Government exhibiting everything that will show the resources of the colony and the means hitherto adopted by the Government for developing them. The Chairman was requested to ask the Premier to arrange with Joubert and Twopenny for the necessary apace.
Another scoundrel was caught in the act of criminally, assaulting a little giil in Hagley Park this morning. He was collared at mien l>y a passer-by and sent to the lock-up. Astah'e was l)ii rm-d at Rangiora this morning under circumstances said to be suspicious. Tile fire wRs with difficulty prevented from spreading to another house. Two horses were burned to death; They were insured with some harness, ike., for £IOO in the Transatlantic, but the sbdble Was uninsured'. No sign of a light corild bfe seen two hours before the fire broke out, and a Waggon was drawn up td the building out of its usudl place. .An inquiry is balled fob.
