At the inquest on the body of Alex. Olsen, lamp-trimmer of the Taiaroa, a verdict of “ Found drowned ” was returned. William Cooper, winner of the Robroy canoe race, made the voyage to Waiwcra, and arrived safe. Government have purchased the hulk Clara Hargreaves for the reception and fumigation of mails. It will be stationed at Orakei Bay as an intermediate quarantine station. I he directors of the Hational Insurance Company havedecided to strengthen the institution by issuing another hundred thousand shares, and will offer the same to the present shareholders at -25 s each under easy calls. This will double the present capital ; the premium on same 10s per share will be carried to the reserve fund. A meeting of shareholders will be called at onee to consider the proposal. February 5. Constable Young, at Port Chalmers, effected a clever capture of a burglar on Friday night. Hearing footsteps in a jeweller’s shop, he tried the door, when the burglar escaped by the back. The conslul >le gave chase, overtaking the man, who struck him in the face. A struggle ensued, but the constable managed to lock up his prisoner. A brooch was found on him, and watches were found in the grass. A great deal of otlmproperly is missing. It is surmised that an accomplice is still at large. The coroner’s jury have found Walde-
man, of Queenstown, guilty of arson in setting fire to his premises in Ballarat street. This refers to the store, from which the fire spread, not to the attempt to burn down his private house. CRICKET. ENGLISH ELEVEN V, AUCKLAND. Auckland, February 4. The All-England innings closed for 214 i’uns. Auckland in their second innings scored 94. This left the Englishmen three to get to win, which they did without the loss of wicket. The Englishmen continued the innings and lost five wickets for 90 runs. OTAGO V, CANTERBURY. Dunedin, February 3. The interproviheial match, Canterbury v. Otago, began to-day. Otago scored 153 in the first innings. Canterbury has lost six wickets for 43 runs. Febiuary 4. The interprovincial cricket match continued to-day. Canterbury in their first innings scored 91. Otago in second innings scored 93, leaving Canterbury 156 to get to win. The latter in their second innings have three wickets fallen for 2 runs.
