News is to baud that a man named Finn has been burned to death at John Perry’s station, Upper Taueru, while burning scrub. Two attempts have been made during the last fortnight to set fire to a house in Gloucester street, each being discovered just in time. NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION. Christchurch, February 2. A telegram was received this morning from Melbourne by Twopenny that a number of paintings were expected to arrive there from England for the Art Gallery in the Christchurch Exhibition, and that Mr Fletcher, who occupied the post of Superintendent of the British Art Gallery at the Melbourne Exhibition, will hold a similar position in the Christchurch Exhibition. The promoters, while willing to receive entries up to March, cannot guarantee the full space to those persons applying after February 26. In allotting the positions of the various exhibits, preference will be given to those applications which were earliest made. The contractor for the erection of the building is making fair progress with his work, and it is expected that the greater portion of the framework will be up this week. The formation of carriage drives has been completed, and metalling is being actively proceeded with.

WELLINGTON RACES. Wellington, February 2. The race meeting to-day enjoyed beautiful weather. There was a moderate attendance. The Maiden was a walk over for Magnolia, Salvage being scratched. Hurdles and Handicap—Clarence, 1 ; Agent, 2; Scrutineer, 3. Tutara and General alao started. It was a good race, and was won by a neck. A Hack Hurdle Race was won by Totara. The Cup brought a good field, the winner turning up in Hilda, with Salvage second, and Poet third. The Flying Stakes Handicap— Mischief, 1; Luna, 2 ; Somnus, 3. This was won by a length, after a good race.

THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS AT AUCKLAND.

Auckland*:February 2. The match with the All England eleven commenced to-day. The weather was splendid and 2000 were present. Play did not commence till past one. The twenty-two, Muniford captain, went to the wickets and were all out for 122, Just before six. Lynch top score with 19. Shaw and Barlow bowled. The fielding of the English was, sometimes, careless. Auckland made the top score of the colony. Peate was unwell, not bowling, Barlow secured 10 wickets, and Shaw 8.
