VOLUNTEER DISTRICT PRIZE FIRING.

On Saturday last 36 rnsn of our local Volunteers turned out to take part in the firing for the prizes granted by the Government to the Volunteers in this district. ■ Lieut. Spence was in command. For the morning and forenoon squads the weather was anything but agreeable for shooting, which greatly decreased the chances of our gallant defenders to secure firat honors, which they had made up their minds to do. However, as will be seen below, Kumara secures the bulk of the prizes, viz., four out of six in each set, which proves the best average shooting, Hokitika fired on the 21st inst., and Grey mouth on the 18 th inst. Below we append the names of the prize winners : First Set. Open to all Volunteers in the district. Distances, 200, 500, and 600 yards. Se ven shots at each distance.
