THE LOCAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.

[to the editor.} SlR —It is With reluctance I have to’ draw public attention to,, the system adopted in the election of our school committees. To the most obtuse it must appear.glaringly rotten,’ as by it any clique of men, however disposed,; can return one or more persons to sit and manage education affairs. It appears to me that the genius who invented the system was a most bitted opponent to our national system of education, and intended to upset by underhand' means what he found impossible otherwise. At the late election how very few genuine representative votes were recorded, as any one riiay tsee by looking at yourlast issue ; while in nearly every instance the unfair power given to voters _ was displayed.' I most unhesitatingly affirm that were proper ballot voting used, the result would have been very different; not that I wish to slight those gentlemen: who have the honor to form our committee this year, but I do most decHedy protest against hole and corner elections ; and this system is nothing more nor less. Another subject which requires attention I would also allude to, regarding our committee. It is, when any householder has cause of complaint, their complaint should be listened to before the retiring committee vacates’ office, as upon the election of the new one there is no use, for should the complaints be verified the public would take good care not to return the old members to again give cause. Besides/ iu justice to the cominittee-men, it should be so, to give them a chance tof repel unfounded accusations. Hoping that those who are now ia a position to enter their protest against this grievance and that our member, Mr Seddon, will give it faithful consideration in the proper quarter, and remedy tkia just cause of complaint—' I am, yours &c., W. S. Hanxa. Kifmara, Jan. 31, 1883.
