BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall on Thursday evening ; present— His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Campbell, Horne, Seddon, Burger, Dove, Barnett, Pollock, and Anderson. Mr Budkin, the only absent member, was attending the Central Board Education meeting at Greymouth, The minutes of two previous meetings and also of tire annual meeting, were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. The inward correspondence was received and considered. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Dove, an application from P. Whelan to have the amount of a contract supplemented was refern d to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. The application of Ah Young for compensation fm* removal of his house was not entertained. Mr Ingall’s application for improvements to footpath in Seddon street was' referred to the Borough Surveyor. A letter from Mr Gargnillo requesting that the footpath at the corner of First street be extended from its junction with Seddon street was referred to the Public Works Committee to report. In reply to a communication from the Colonial Secretary, it was moved by Cr. Seddon and seconded by the Mayor—“ That the question of Government subsidy he brought before the Hon. Mr Rolleston on his arrival, and that in the meantime the Town Clerk be instructed to inform the Colonial Treasurer that the Council has anticipated its subsidy, and would therefore request that if the Government insist on stopping the money, that in fairness the amount should be stopped from goldfields revenue and gold duty as it accrues.”—The motion was carried. A letter from Mr H. M. Healey to have a box culvert for the drain in front of his house in the Main street was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. A petition was received praying that Third street be connected with Mr Blake’s tramway to Diliman’s.—The petition was leferrcd to the. Public Works Committee to report; the committee also to report on repairs necessary to the boundary track. Much time was occupied in dealing with an application from the Minister “f Mines’ Reception Committee] to defray losses, if any, incurred by the, reception of Mr Rolleston and suite ; and, after several motions and amendment to motions had been put and lost, Cr. Barnett moved, and Cr. Pollock seconded—“ That the Reception Committee he informed that the Council will defray any deficiency, provided j their outlay shall first have been approved of by his Worship the Mayor and the Chairman of the Finance Committee.” This motion was carried.
