*— 81-DAILY MAILS BETWEEN KUMARA, GOLDSBOROUGH, AND STAFFORD. [special to KUMARA times.] Hokitika, January 9. Mr Seddon, M.H.JEL., interviewed Mr Jago, Chief Postmaster, Hokitika, today, and requested that a morning and evening mail he sent from and to Kumara, Waimea, and Stafford Town. Mr Jago, without hesitation, agreed that, seeing it would be a public convenience, the same should be done. He would therefore issue instructions accordingly. ■ —_—. [NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Reefton, Janeary 8. The Hon. Mr Rolleston arrived here yesterday. Wanganui, January 5. Joseph Thomson, while intoxicated, made a determined attempt at suicide by jumping off the Wanganui this evening. He was rescued by a boat from the steamer Clyde and locked up. In 1866 the same man jumped over a cliff at Okawa, but was saved by his clothes catching the bushes. About a year ago ho threw himself into the Jlntaki River, and narrowly escaped drowning. Auckland, January 7. The infant child of George Vatise fell overboard from the steamer Durham, at Northern Wairoa. The father jumped overboard and re-cued it. At the inquest on. the body of Charles Gledshan, who died aboard the Wellington, the jury returned a verdict of death from natural causes. Christchurch, January 7. Shortly after midnight two fires occurred, one at the Union Bank, the other at Reese's timber yard. The last person on the Union Bank premises left at about 7 p.m. All was then quite safe, and there had been no light any where near where the fire originated for a considerable time previous. The fire was extinguished about an hour after the engines got to work, but it broke out again between 2 and 3 o'clock, and great trouble was experienced in'fiually extinguishing, if.
The business portion of the bank's premises was completely gctted, and the operations of the bank are now carried on in Lewis and Gould's buildings", Cathedral Sq-iHiv. [t is believed the tire declined iii the chief officers toomi The following are the insurances:— ' 7 Union. .£2000; Northern.-Royal, and Imperial, .£ls 0 each ; London, Liverpool, and Globe, £1300; total; £7BOO. The fire at Reese's, occurred about the centre of the premises; where fires are never used. Six horses were saved with great difficulty; The property was insured in tile New Zealand office for £2750. The damage is estimated at £2OO. The brigade prevented the flames from spreading to the adjoining, premises; The ground fl >oi l of the Union is not so mush injured as was expected. The total dauiage frbni the fire is now estimated at abdiit £ISOO. ■ "
