BRITISH AND FOREIGN, London, January 3. A large Liberal meeting was held this evening at Birmingham. John Bright and Chamberlain, two of the members for the borough, were present and delivered lengthy addresses. The former, in the course of his speech, alluded to England’s foreign relations, and stated that even if the country was without allies there was no power that had more friends. In reference to Irish affairs, Bright justified the policy of coercion which had been pursued in that country. Chamberlain, also referred to the state of affairs in Ireland, and stated there was a decrease of fully 40 per cent, in the number of agrarian outrages, and the position was decidedly hopeful. He ridiculed the idea of the landlords being compensated for the reduction of rents. January 5. An extensive seizure of arms was made to-day by the police at Kilrush, in the. County Clare, Ireland. The Daily news publishes a state meet to the effect that the French Government. repudiate the reported an

Melbourne, January 5. Arrived, this morning, the Union Company’s steamship Rotomahana, from Bluff. The English mails were placed on hoard the Orient Company’s steamship Orient, which sailed to-day for Plymouth. Information has been received that her Majesty’s ship Diamond and Espiegle will shortly relieve the Emerald and Cormorant on the Australian Sta.* tion. The Orient Steamship Garonne has arrived here and been quarantined. She has forty-three passengers for New Zealand ports. It is uncertain whether she will remain here or go on to Sydney, as usual. Brisbane, January 6. Both Houses of the Queensland Parliament were prorogued to-day to July 21st.
