HOKITIKA RACES.
[west coast times.] The second day’s lacing, which ought to have taken p! :ce on Tuesday lust, had to he postponed on account of the weather until yesterday. The Racing Chili, as a matter of course, made a financial loss hy the postponement. It was expected that there would at least have been 1200 persons at the course on Tuesday as there were ou Monday, but numbers left town between the two facing days and not above half the number we.o present on the second day.
For the Handicap Hurdle Race of 30sovs., 2 miles, there were entries, Black Prince, Kensington, ami Bat. The last named took the lead from the start, and kept it throughout until the finish. Kensington was the favorite at starting, but the first hurdle brought Demuth, the jockey to terra firtna, and, though he smartly re-niouuted, his chances were then gone. In the second round Black Prince, which was making good running up to that time, baulked at the hurdle nearly opposite the Stand, and this left the Bat an easy winner by about a hundred yards. Mr Barton’s Bat, aged, Sat 121hs (R. Barton ... ... ... ... 1 Mr Clarke’s Kensington, aged, 9st 7lbs (W. Demuth) ... ... 2 Mr Osborne’s Black Prince, aged, 12st 71bs (W. Hamum) . ... 3 The Westland Handicap proved a complete “ boil over ” to the knowing ones. Nothing would be heard of for this race but Greyhound, which was backed to a considetable amount at 2 to 1 against the field. As high as 3 and 4 to 1 was laid against Elfin King, and 3 to 1 against Lady Grey. An excellent start was made, Greyhound and Lady Grey keeping neck and neck for over a mile, with the King a few lengths behind but well in hand. In the last round young Fane made a splendid spurt, passing the two leaders, and receiving a vociferous cheer from spectators. Once attaining a good lead he held it until the finish, coming in several lengths before Greyhound, with Lady G rey a good third. The stakes amounted to 75sovs., with a sweep of ssovs., added, the second horse saving his sweep. Distance, 2 miles : Mr Clarke’s Elfin King, aged, 6st 2lbs (F. Fane) 1 Mr Frei't h’s Greyhound, 4 years, 9st 81bs (»T. Freeth, jun.) ... ... 2 Mr Stephenson’s Lady Grey, aged, 7st (W. Brown) ... ... ... 3 The Farmers’ Race of lO.sovs., mile heats, was a well-contested There were four entries, but Nellie did not come to the post. The first heat was a hard race between Leo mid Conniess, the former winning by a head. In the second heat Leo again kept first [dace, with Nancy Beil close up. The Bell and Leo carried L2st 11 lb each, and the Conn cess Set 1311>s. For the Ladies’ Purse of 20sovs., and a silver cup presented by Mr Lange, jeweller, of the value of lO.sovs., 11miles, there were three entries. Mr Freeth, s-nior, was the first to catch the Judge’s eye, though Mr 0. Barton was close on his heels all the way round. Mr Freeth’s gc Greyhound, 10st 12lbs (Fiveth) ... ... ... I Mr Barton’s Bat, 12st 111 b (C. Barton) ... ... ... ... 2 Mr Osborne’s Longlands, 12st 11 lbs (Osborne) The Consolation Handicap of lOsovs. 1 mile, for all beaten horses, only brought out Mr Stephenson’s Lady Giey, 7st, and Mr Evans’s Bide-a-wee, <st Blbs, the latter winning with ease.
